シカゴ大学Committee of Social Thoughtの教授であったMarshall Hodgsonの三部作のvol 2。"Islamdom" "Islamicate"等のネオロギスムスがあり、晦渋な文章は気になるが、情報量の豊富さはすごい。精神史を専門にやっていた人の歴史書だが、政治・経済発展史も充実している。中世イスラム哲学(Falsafah)やスーフィズムの説明はとても詳しく、面白い。
