1921年にエルンスト・カッシーラーの下で博士論文を書き、さらにフッサール、ハイデガーと共に学んだレオ・シュトラウス（1899-1973）は、1930年代に思想的な転換期を迎える。ニーチェに心酔し、シオニズム運動に傾倒していたシュトラウス。その彼がどのようにして後に知られるような、古典的な合理性の復興者となっていったのか？その謎にマイヤー、パンゲル、ヤフィーといった政治哲学者、シュトラウス研究者たちが迫る。さらに後半には、1929-1939年にシュトラウスによって記された短い論考も翻訳・掲載されており、実証的に思想の転換を追うことが出来るようになっている。

ちなみに編者のヤフィーとルーダーマンは大学時代の恩師である。彼等の講義や演習を通して、思索の方法論やテクストへの向き合い方を教えられた。スピノザの思想との取り組みもその時始まった。
